Gustavo Machado, Head Coach

Gustavo began swimming when he was 5 years old. He participated in small meets in his hometown Ouro Preto in Brazil. Swimming has always been his passion, his favorite sport.

He received his first bachelor degree in Economics from Centro Universitario UNA. After some years working in the stock market, he decided to switch career paths, and began to study Physical Education, which is more in line with who he is. He received his second bachelors in Physical Education from Centro Universitario, Belo Horizonte.

His experience in coaching was gained from whom he describes as “a brilliant coach that taught me almost everything I know”. Patricia Ottero taught him, most importantly, how to be a good swimmer and how to bring out the best swimming in others.

In 2011, he began swimming competitively, and he now enjoys collecting awards for his achievements. In 2012, his Brazilian swim team, Bodytech Savassi, won first place at the national level. In this same year, he also started to work as an assistant coach. In 2013, his team continued their winning streak  and went to the World Masters Games in Torino, Italy. Gustavo was the assistant coach. His team won many individuals events and relays. He  was part of one relay and in this relay, they went to third place. In 2014, he went to the FINA World Masters Championship in Montreal, Canada as head coach, his team won first place in the Mens 50 Freestyle relay and second place in Mens 50 Medley relay.

As a swimmer, he was in the top ten of the Brazilian circuit for two years in a row. At FINA World Masters Championship, he swam some of his personal best times. As a coach, his focus is to improve technique and stroke efficiency. Gustavo is a very active person, who enjoys running, biking and being outdoors.
